While learning about Virtual Reality, I encountered a few roadblocks that I had not anticipated. Chief among them is the technology itself. For this project, I focused on 360 image capture. There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to using 360 image capture technology. Of the devices / apps that I used, the Ricoh Theta camera was definitely the easiest. Google Street View and Bubb.li were a bit more difficult, but still quite manageable. However, if you are willing to "play" and are open to new learning, 360 image capture is a blast!
I also had the pleasure of interviewing our professor, Len Scrogan, an expert in the burgeoning field of VR. One of the most important lessons that he imparted was that technology is only as valuable as the teacher employing it. If technology is not creatively used, it risks becoming a high tech textbook. Len also stressed the importance of placing the child at the center of instructional planning when using VR, a lesson that I think all teachers would be wise to heed.
